Italians and the Workers’ Movement in Brazil

1988-1989

This booklet was produced by the Central Unica dos Trabalhadores, known as the Unified Workers’ Central in English, but most commonly referred to by its acronym, CUT. Formed in the early 1980s, it constituted a critical mass of resistance to the military regime in Brazil since 1964. Today, CUT is Brazil’s largest and most important workers’ union. The mention of Italian workers in this edition recalls the mass migration of Italians from the late 19th century to Brazil and other Southern Cone countries, where the Italian experience of union activism and politics acted as an important point of reference and inspiration for several Latin American workers’ movements.
